Obesity is a global epidemic that has been rapidly spreading in the last 50 years. World Health Organization (WHO) projects that by 2015, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and more than 700 million will be obese.
The latest study by Kuwait Nutrition Surveillance System indicates that the disease affects 80 % of Kuwait’s population. At least 38 % of males and 48.5 % of females are suffering from obesity in the country.
Increases in Overweight
Increases in overweight and obesity rates are attributable to a number of factors including:
A global shift in diet towards increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in fat and sugars but low in vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients; and
A trend towards decreased physical activity due to the increasingly sedentary nature of many forms of work, changing modes of transportation, and increasing urbanization.
